Masonry work in Castro Valley, flats to hills
Castro Valley has no city hall of its own. It's an unincorporated part of Alameda County, so the county handles building permits here, and you can apply, schedule inspections or check a permit's status on the county permit portal. If your job needs a permit, we take care of it with the county and don't start until it's issued, so on those jobs the permit sets the start date. The county also requires its own business license from any business doing work in Castro Valley, even one that holds another city's license. The price mostly moves with the size of the job, the material, how much tear-out or digging comes first and how far we carry everything from the street. I measure, take photos and write all of it into the estimate so you can see what each part covers.
Our crew works here the same way we do in Oakland and Hayward, but the ground is different. Down on the flats around Castro Valley Boulevard the lots are mostly level, with brick steps, garden walls and older driveways. Head east and the yards climb into the hills where several creeks start, so slopes get terraced with retaining walls, and the first thing I check on any wall up there is where the water goes when it comes downhill.
What we build and fix in Castro Valley
Foundation repair
Cracks in a foundation on a sloped Castro Valley lot usually trace back to water or moving soil, so we find the cause before we patch anything.
Chimney repair
Older chimneys here take a beating from settling, so we rebuild a cracked crown, the concrete cap on top, and repoint the rest while the brick's sound.
Tuckpointing
When mortar joints on brick steps or walls go sandy, we grind them out and refill with a mix soft enough to suit the old brick.
Brick repair
Cracked or spalled brick, where the face has popped off, gets cut out and replaced with brick we match in color and size to what's on the house.
Driveway pavers
A lot of driveways here climb from the street, so we build paver drives on a packed base with edges that hold the pieces against creeping downhill.
Retaining wall construction
On hillside lots we terrace the yard with walls that drain from behind, since water trapped behind a wall is what usually tips it.
Masonry restoration
Older brick and stone here often wear years of patches, so we remove the bad ones, clean it up and repair it to match.
Fireplace installation
We build brick and stone fireplaces for Castro Valley living rooms and backyards, laid out around how you use the space and where the chimney has to run.
Stone veneer installation
Thin stone set over a plain stucco front or a bare foundation wall, with a drainage gap behind it so water that gets in can get back out.
Concrete block walls
Block walls on property lines and slopes get steel and grout in the hollow cells, so they hold up when the ground leans on them.
Foundation block wall installation
For an addition, a garage or a crawlspace wall on a hillside lot, we lay block foundation walls on footings dug to solid ground.
Outdoor kitchen masonry
Backyard kitchens here often sit on a terrace cut into the slope, so we build the block base, counters and stone facing on a solid footing.
Walkway construction
Front walks and side paths on these lots often need a step or two, so we build them in brick, stone or pavers with even, easy steps.
Brick wall installation
Garden walls are where I started, and we still build them, along with planters, in brick and mortar picked to match your house.
Stone masonry
Natural stone suits the hill properties here, and we lay it dry-stacked, with no mortar, or mortared for walls, steps and planters that look like they belong.
Brick pointing
Pointing is the smaller fix, for the joints that have worn out, like the bottom rows of a wall where water sits, without redoing the whole face.
What signs mean your Castro Valley masonry needs a look?
On sloped lots here, water and soil keep moving downhill against walls and steps, so the small signs usually show up first on the low side of the yard.
- Retaining wall leaning or bulging
- Mortar crumbling out of joints
- White crust on brick or stone
- Stair-step cracks in brick or block
- Pavers sinking or rocking underfoot
- Loose bricks at the chimney top
If you see one of these, call or send the form and I'll come take a look. Plenty of cracks can wait, and I'll tell you if yours is one.
Should you repair the old wall or rebuild it?
I start with what caused the damage, because on a Castro Valley hillside that's usually water or moving ground, and that answer decides whether a fix will last.
When a repair does it
If the wall still stands straight and the brick or block is sound, we repoint the bad joints, swap out broken pieces and fix the drainage that caused the trouble. If that will hold, that's what I'll recommend.
When it's time to rebuild
When a wall is leaning or bulging, the footing has failed or nothing drains the water behind it, fresh mortar just gives the crack a nicer frame. We take it down and rebuild it on a solid base with a way for water to get out.
What Castro Valley hillsides ask of a wall
I come out to look at the job myself and stay on site with our crew while we work, so the person who wrote your estimate is the one watching the work.
Water tracked down first
Before we touch a joint, I find where the water comes from, and on a slope that's usually uphill.
Mortar matched to old brick
Older brick needs a softer mortar than new block, so we mix for the wall instead of grabbing the hardest bag.
Licensed and insured
We're licensed through the Contractors State License Board and insured on every job we do in Castro Valley.
Straight answers on cracks
I'd rather tell you a crack can wait than sell you a wall you don't need yet.
Satisfaction guaranteed on every job
Most of our calls come from people who saw our work down the street, so every job is our next ad.
