Driveway pavers in San Leandro CA - pavers that stay tight and level under your car
Cracked concrete, or pavers sinking in the tire tracks? We build paver driveways from the base up, so they stay flat and locked tight.

What does it take to put in a paver driveway in San Leandro?
Driveway pavers in San Leandro are concrete pavers set on a thin layer of sand over compacted stone and soil, with edge restraints holding them tight, so you get a driveway that carries your car without sinking or spreading apart.
Most calls start with an old concrete driveway that's cracked and lifted, or a paver job that's sinking in the tire tracks because somebody skimped on what's underneath. Most of a driveway is the part you never see, so we plan the base, the edges and the drainage as carefully as the pavers. If a slope beside it needs holding back, we handle retaining wall construction too, and masonry restoration for tired brick steps next to it.
The price moves with the size, how much old driveway has to come out, how deep the base goes, the pavers and pattern you pick, and whether you need drainage or work at the street. The schedule turns mostly on the size of the dig and on any permit that has to be issued first. In California, digging, grading and paving fall under the state licensing board's earthwork and paving class. Your written estimate spells out what each part covers.
What a solid paver driveway needs
Bids can look alike on paper and differ a lot underneath. Here's what the national trade group for concrete pavers says a driveway needs, and what I'd ask any bidder about.
Layout and marked lines
The job starts with layout before any soil comes out, and the trade group says to get underground lines marked first, often with one call at least two days ahead.
A deeper stone base
The trade group calls for a thicker compacted stone base under a driveway than under a walk, and more where the site or traffic demands it, so ask each bidder what base they plan.
Edges that hold the line
Edge restraints along the sides keep the pavers pressed together, so the weight of a car turning in and out can't push them apart.
Drainage in slow soil
In clay or other slow-draining soil, the trade group recommends drain pipe with holes in it under the base, a small cost now that pays back many times in extra years.
Permeable pavers as an option
Permeable pavers have stone-filled joints that let water soak down through them, and they're ready for traffic as soon as the work is done, with nothing to wait on while it cures.
Paver driveway questions we hear
How much does a new paver driveway cost in San Leandro?
Remodeling a driveway in the San Francisco area, with materials and installation, usually runs about $8 to $23 per square foot. Where yours falls depends on size, tear-out and how deep the base goes, and the written estimate shows each part so you can compare it against other bids.
What is the best paver pattern for a driveway that gets daily car traffic?
A 45 or 90 degree herringbone is the trade group's recommendation for steady car traffic, because it gives the most interlock and strength. In a herringbone the pavers butt into each other's sides in a zigzag, so they brace one another instead of lining up in rows a tire can push. We lay patterns that lock together under the weight of a car.
Do I need a city permit for a paver driveway in San Leandro?
If any of the work is in the public right-of-way, usually the sidewalk and curb along the street, you'll need an encroachment permit from the City of San Leandro. The city also requires a grading permit when a job moves 50 cubic yards of soil or more, about six dump truck loads, or digs 5 feet deep or more, and its code lists other conditions too. Contractors pulling an encroachment permit need both a California state business license and a San Leandro business license on file. If your job needs a permit, we take care of it with the city or the county, whichever covers your address, and we don't start until it's issued.
How do I take care of permeable pavers after they're installed?
The joints often need topping up with stone three to six months after install, because the stone in them normally settles over the first few months. It's a small job, and it's normal, not a sign anything went wrong.
What causes driveway pavers to sink or spread apart?
Usually it's what's underneath, like a base too thin for a car's weight, weak edges that let the pavers creep, or water sitting in slow-draining soil. The pavers are usually fine, so I look for which of those it was before we pull anything up, and we can often relay the same pavers once the base is fixed.
