Masonry work in San Leandro that started on a neighbor's steps

I started out laying brick on weekends for neighbors here in San Leandro, mostly steps and garden walls, and the calls didn't stop. I picked up the trade on those jobs and next to masons who'd been at it longer than me, and Liberty San Leandro Concrete & Masonry has been my full-time work since 2021.

We're best known for careful mortar work on older brick and for walls that stay where we put them. Most of our calls come from homeowners who saw our work on a house down the street, which suits me fine.

We're based in San Leandro and work in the cities around it, from Berkeley and Oakland down to Union City and out to Dublin and San Ramon. Call (510) 264-7154 or reach us through the contact page, and you can read more about our crew and how we work.

Masonry work for San Leandro homes

Liberty San Leandro Concrete & Masonry is the masonry contractor San Leandro homeowners call for brick repair, tuckpointing, leaning walls and failing chimneys. Price turns on how much work there is, how hard it is to reach and what's causing the damage. A needed permit sets the start date, and your written estimate prices each part.

Why San Leandro homeowners call us

I'd rather the work outlast the talk about price, so here's what you can expect from us, before a single brick comes out.

  • One person, start to finish

I look at the job myself and stay on site with our crew through the final walkthrough, so nothing gets lost between bid and build.

  • Mortar matched to your brick

We match new mortar to your old brick in strength and color, so the repair protects the wall instead of wearing it down.

  • We find the leak first

Before we fix what water broke, we find where it's getting in, because new mortar over a leak that's still running just crumbles again.

  • An estimate you can compare

Your estimate is written out part by part so you can hold it against other bids, and if a crack can wait, I'll say so.

Where we work around San Leandro

Liberty San Leandro Concrete & Masonry is based in San Leandro, CA, and works across the cities around it. Each of the 12 areas below has its own page, including Castro Valley and Hayward, and we work in plenty of places in between them too.

Working on San Leandro's older homes

Plenty of the houses we see in San Leandro are older raised-floor homes built before today's earthquake standards. That's why I look hard at chimneys and foundation walls, since loose brick and tired mortar are usually what shaking finds first. The state and the city both add earthquake design rules to the structural code, so structural work here gets built to them.

When we show up, we cover plants and paving near the work and keep the mess inside the area we're working in. Our crew cleans up before leaving each day, and we keep a path open to your door while we work.

Questions San Leandro homeowners ask

How much does masonry repair cost in San Leandro?

The cost depends on how much brick or stone needs work, how hard it is to reach and whether a leak or other cause has to be fixed first. Resetting a few loose bricks on a garden wall is a much smaller job than rebuilding the top of a chimney. Your estimate is written out part by part, so you'll see what drives your number.

Do you charge for a masonry estimate in San Leandro?

No, our estimates are free, done on site and come with no obligation. I measure, take photos and write up what each part of the job covers. Call (510) 264-7154 or send the form to set one up.

How soon can you start a masonry job?

Start dates mostly depend on whether the job needs a permit, because we don't begin until it's issued. Rain can also move a work day, since fresh mortar needs dry weather to set. We reply within one business day to set up the first visit.

Is your masonry company licensed and insured?

Yes, Liberty San Leandro Concrete & Masonry is licensed and insured. When a job needs a permit, we take care of it with the city or the county, whichever covers your address.

What happens after I request a masonry estimate?

We reply within one business day to set a time, then I come out to look at the job myself. I look for what's causing the damage before I price the repair, so the estimate covers the real problem. If you go ahead, I'm on site with our crew while the work gets done.

Do you guarantee your masonry work?

Yes, satisfaction guaranteed on every job. I'm on site with our crew while the work gets done, so if something doesn't look right to you, you can point it out to the person in charge.

What kind of mortar should be used to repair old brick?

Old brick usually needs a mortar matched to its softness and color, not a hard modern mix, because the mortar should wear before the brick does. Hard mortar in soft brick can chip and crack the brick faces over time, which is why we match ours to your wall.

Does a retaining wall need a permit in San Leandro?

Some don't, because the city's permit FAQ lists retaining walls not over 4 feet, measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, as needing no building permit. That only applies when nothing like a slope or driveway loads the wall from above and it isn't holding back flammable liquids. Digging 5 feet deep or more, or moving about six dump truck loads of soil, can call for a separate grading permit. That FAQ isn't dated and the city updated its codes this year, so check with the city's Permit Center, and if your wall needs a permit, we take care of it.
